guide to a smarter learning process

A Beginner Guide To A Smart Learning Process

Here is a complete beginner guide to a smart learning process to get you started no matter where you are in life. You can be in school, out of school, never had a quality education. No matter what the situation is, it is important to always keep learning. Learning is one of the most critical aspects of our lives.

Let’s stop and think about this for a moment. When we learn things, we start to recall them. You are reading this, aren’t you? Think about where you would be if you did not learn to read.

Often we tend to tuck our knowledge away after school and just stop learning or educating ourselves. We get caught in the daily grind and only learn information to keep our jobs, but it is important to stay on top of everything going on around you and that may affect you in some manner.

The learning process had changed dramatically over the last decade and will continue to change and evolve.

Watch this video to find out how to obtain smarter learning processes 😊 It can also be found on my Facebook Group page, or on my Youtube channel.

The Essential Steps of a Smart Learning Process

First and foremost, if you’re learning how to do something the wrong way, you’ll continue to use it the wrong way. And bad habits are hard to break IF you even realize or find out you are doing something wrong.

But, before understanding the learning process, we much understand the stages of learning.

1. Unconscious Inability

Let’s start by imagining something you are good at doing and you do almost daily. Now think back to when you started doing that skill. Were you good at doing that particular thing? And if you were, are you better at it now?

You had never heard of the skill you are now good at doing, yet you had the desire to learn it until you perfected it. This is the first stage of the learning process. It’s finding something you know nothing about.

2. Conscious Inability

Do you drive a car? Before this stage, you never felt the need to drive (of course it’s an ambition for many young people, but you knew you had to be a certain age to drive). But to drive you had to study for a written test and then take a driving test and drive a certain amount of hours with an experienced driver.

And I can guarantee almost all of you made mistakes on the driving test and perhaps the written test.

This is the stage where you feel learning is slow and you’re aware of your mistakes.

3. Conscious Ability

By this stage, you almost know everything you need to know, but at the same time, you still remained focus on your new skill and you concentrate more diligently.

You know the rules of the road and you are a good driver. But there is still that need to not talk to anyone while driving and you cannot turn on the radio yet.

So, at this stage, the learning is faster, but it is still not a habit.

4. Unconcious Ability

Okay, the last stage we all strive for. You’ve made it and you know everything or almost everything about the skill. It now becomes a habit or second nature to you. You are relaxed, confident and your unconscious mind takes over.

Different Styles of The Learning Process

We now understand the essential steps of the learning process, now let’s focus on the different learning styles.

  • Visual: Learning through the visual aspect of charts, pictures, graphs, etc…
  • Listening: LearningVerbal through sounds and music.
  • Verbal: Learning through the spoken and written word.
  • Independent study:  Learning individually through self-study and assignments. (This one probably applies more to those of us that are out of school and continue the learning process as well as those in school learning something beyond their classroom studies)
  • Social: Learning through groups o talking to people. (This is also a big one now with social media, etc. PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS TO RESEARCH EVERYTHING YOU HEAR AND READ THROUGH THIS MANNER AS THERE IS A LOT OF FALSE INFORMATION OUT THERE)
  • Logical: Learning through systems, reason, and logic.
  • Physical: Learning through the body, the “hands-on” approach, and through the sense of touch.

Your learning style is important to know because it’s how we internally experience and learn processes. It influences our brain for learning.

Knowing how to learn is vital because once you know your style, you developed a learning process to become a more effective learner.

Now keep in mind, it is important to know your primary learning style but it may not be able to be applied to all forms of learning. So, learning several different styles is very helpful to learn a multitude of different things.

How To Become An Effective Learner

We have discussed this on many occasions before, the learning process varies from person to person. So, be patient with yourself and don’t compare your speed of learning with others. What you may learn faster, another person may take more time or vice versa.

1. Improve your memory

Learning is not just about acquiring information. It’s about retaining it too. If we are to learn something, we will have to relearn and do it over and over again. When recall information, it enhances our memory to retain that information.

2, Keep learning and practicing new things

Learning and practicing new skills also enhances the sharpness of our brains. Of course, learning a new skill develops over time, but there is nothing wrong with learning other things along the process.

3. Learn in different ways

Again, we may have our primary style of learning we fall back on, but diving into other styles brings great benefit too.

You may not start off the best, but just like anything else, improving the skill with other styles will only cement the knowledge in your mind.

4. Teaching what you learned to others

This is huge. Actually, there are other countries that use this process with their children’s education. When children learn from other children, they may understand them better than an adult trying to teach them. And those children that are teaching their schoolmates, become better communicators and the information they are teaching becomes more cement in their minds. It also teaches confidence and brings self-esteem.

5. Use relational learning

Relational learning is relating new information to the knowledge you already have.

For example, remembering an acronym. You create a title from your own words that help you associate something familiar to you.

6. Gaining practical experience

This is one of the best ways to learn, though good old experience. When we experience things for ourselves we learn quickly what to do and what not to do. And ofter we attach emotions to those experiences so it sticks with us more. This will help us recall what worked and what did not work and maybe why.

7. Refer back to the past is you need to

You have heard of the phrase “Learn from your past…..” Of course, the learning process is not perfect and neither are we. We are going to forget certain aspects of a particular process. If you don’t recall, then go back to your notes. Because remember, you don’t want to rely on your memory if you are not certain as we don’t want to learn the process the wrong way.

8. Test yourself

Keeping yourself honest is a great thing to do and there are benefits to testing yourself. Sometimes you may think you know everything about a topic, going back and testing yourself will help. And when we test ourselves this improves our recall ability as well.

Sometimes processes change and we may not be aware, but when you test yourself, you might find those changes and be able to adapt accordingly.

9. Stop multitasking

So yes, we should be learning things constantly. But what we shouldn’t be doing is trying to do several tasks at once.

Let’s revisit the driving example. When you first started driving we you eating, listening to the radio, and carrying on a conversation? Most likely you were not.

We ought to focus on one activity at a time when we are first learning a new skill, task, etc. The more you do it, the more it becomes part of your “Unconcious Ability.”

When you multitask while learning a new skill, you will not be as focused and the learning process is less effective.

Final Thoughts

The learning process is a change to a person’s results from experience. While learning to understand the process is up to us, look at the bigger picture, and be aware of what style works best for you. Work to improve your primary style all while working on other styles too. The only way to advance ourselves in life is to keep on learning!
