Motivation, Learn How These 5 Simple Steps Can Help You

Motivation is what causes you to take action.

Understanding yourself is key to a happy successful life.

A way to better understand yourself is to know what motivates you.

If people are taking action, then why do only 20% accomplish their resolutions each year? It’s because they have not determined what their motivation is. We are taking action and have the willpower, so what’s missing?

Willpower only lasts so long, so we need to determine what motivates us.

Consider the following:

1. You would do it for free.

If you are fortunate, you will get paid well to do what motivates you.

Do you know of Van Gough? He was known as one of the greatest artists in history.

Do you know how many paintings he sold in his lifetime? He created over 900, but only sold one.

It wasn’t until after his death that people appreciated his work. He painted because he loved to paint, not to make a living.

2. It’s always on your mind.

What are you thinking about before you go to bed at night or the first thing you wake up thinking about? This is often a sign of what motivates you.

You might try keeping a journal with you for several days and write down your ideas. Then recognize the commonalities.

Also, keep in mind that activities you constantly talk about with your friends and family. These too, are motivational pieces.

3. You get lost in learning.

Are there certain activities you cannot get enough of and lose track of time or engagement?

These are signs of motivation. The key to motivation is that you are pushed to take action.

4. You can list it in the most fulfilling times of your life.

Self-reflection is a good method to recognize what motivates you. Maybe like a new job, your firstborn, or you scored the winning goal or points.  Or you help others not so fortunate, or did a person close to you witness the performance?

These are all cues of motivation. Again, you recognize the commonalities and they drove you to motivate and perform.

If you find joy in creating things, find ways to express it. If you like helping others, then do it. Volunteer, offer services, etc.

5. You would do it if no one was watching.

Some things we do in life because society tells us. And all beliefs will be different.

If I see a homeless person I may give them money or buy them a meal. Others may not. And that’s okay. What matters is the belief behind it.

Find out why you are on this path.

What is your motivation?

Does it make you feel good?

Will, you will be acknowledged by friends or family?

Final Thoughts

Your motivation will change over time.

As you experience different life events your motivation will change.

That’s why it’s a good idea to re-evaluate from time to time.

And remember, you may use only 1 method or all of them at once. That’s up to you to figure out.
