Why Do We Self-Destruct?

What does it mean to self-destruct? It’s when something gets in the way of your aspirations to our goals and dreams to the point that we never accomplish them.

Many of us, I included, have self-destructive behaviors and those behaviors then become habits. Then we allow those habits to undermine our roads to success and a life of happiness. Even odder, we don’t even realize we are doing it. We accept these sabotaging behaviors and habits.

Let’s talk about your brain for a moment. It was built to regulate your life, but little did we know, it has an impact on our mental state as well.

The subconscious part of your mind is the gatekeeper to your comfort zone. It’s your subconscious mind that self-destructs because it is busy protecting you, preventing pain, keeping you safe, etc.

What happens when we step out of the at comfort zone? The subconscious mind kicks in deters us from taking on any new challenges.

When we allow this to happen, we develop “inner voices” that hold us back.

How to Recognize Your Self-Destructing Behaviors

The first thing we need to do to get rid of self-destructing behaviors is to break the cycle. We need to become more aware. Then we need to TAKE ACTION.

1. Perfectionism

How often do you find yourself not taking action because it’s not the right time or needs to have more of a  skills-set before you can continue on? I’m guilty! But I am here to tell you “Perfectionism” is impossible. The perfect time is never going to be “perfect” and you are always going to need to know more because no one is “perfect.”

Once one understands what self-destruction is and why and how it is happening, you will start to take action.

“The only impossible journey is the one you never begin.”

~ Tony Robbins

2. Procrastination

What is procrastination? Procrastination happens when one doesn’t obtain or complete their goals in a timely manner. You listen to your inner voice and then you take your time.

Then what happens? Nothing!

Procrastination is driven by fear. You procrastinate because you are afraid of failing and don’t want to mess up.

The people who have confidence are knocking out their dreams and goals consistently.

3. The Inner Voice and Negative Thinking

We are all our own worst critics.  Our negative self-talk prevents us from doing a lot. We blame ourselves for past failures and then we allow our subconscious minds to tell us we are not worthy. And then we start to believe it too.

Everything them self-destructs and we seldomly achieve anything.

How to Stop Self-Destruction and Get Positive

1. Know your self-worth

Do you know your self-worth? You should. And it should be a positive thought because we are all worthy people. We all deserve success and happiness.

But for many of us, we allow our self-destructing beliefs, habits and behaviors, to control our feelings of self-worth. When you know what these negative habits, behaviors, and beliefs are, we tend to focus more on them, and then we can change them to positive thoughts.

With positive thoughts, come positive outcomes.

2. Face your fears

As I said before, procrastination is fear. If you want to overcome this fear you need to take action. Face the fear.

If you are fearful to try new things and challenges, you will not be able to live a full, happy and positive life.

Do you really want to live a life without happiness and positivity?

Here is a way to face your fears. Write down all of your negative thoughts, feelings, and fears as to why you shouldn’t accomplish your dreams and goals. Keep writing until that are out there.

Then take a look at everything you wrote down. Place an “x” by anything that is life-threatening. I’m pretty sure at this time, you will not see any “x” present. Therefore, you have nothing to fear. So go out and get started!

3. Only listen to your positive thoughts

Every person is different so you will need to find what works for you. For me, I always like to be prepared for things. When I am prepared, there is less stress and more confidence.

As stated before, fear is what holds us back. It’s that subconscious mind that is keeping us in our comfort zone. We believe in our own inner voice, which again is our own worst critic. I’m not worthy enough, or I don’t deserve to be happy, and so forth. These negative thoughts are very self-limiting,

You need to get rid of the negative talk and start focusing on the positive thoughts in order to obtain a positive and fulfilling life.

Have you heard of affirmations? They are beneficial to positive thinking as is, practicing gratitude, showing appreciation,  and doing acts of kindness. All will take you to a positive mindset.

4. Take time to reflect

Self-reflection is very important. We all need time to ourselves every once in a while. Some more so than others.

It is important to self-reflect so we understand why we fail or keep making mistakes. It enables us to think through the choices, decisions, and actions we take. When we self-reflect, we dig deeper into ourselves to gain knowledge about ourselves, our emotions, and our desires.

Only through self-reflection can we know ourselves and understand ourselves better to obtain overall positive transformation,

~Elanor Rosevelt

Final Thoughts

Once you are able to identify your self-destructing behaviors, beliefs, and habits, you open a door to many opportunities that you never knew about.

By using the above-mentioned 4 practical actions, you will enable yourself to take control and live life to its fullest.

No longer allow that “inner critic” hold you back or deter you from things that help you flourish in life.

And never wait until everything is just right or perfect because that time will never come.  There are always going to be challenges and obstacles, but they are there to make you a better person.  Do get started and take action!
