Self-esteem and happiness

A professor from John Hopkins University conducted a survey of school counselors in New Jersey. They were each asked to list five words that best describe students with high self-esteem and those with low self-esteem.

High self-worth students

Low self-worth students

  • Shy
  • Unhappy
  • Quiet
  • Withdrawn
  • Insecure
  • Negative
  • Underachieving
  • Unmotivated
  • Depressed
  • Poor self-image

Values are different between confident versus low self-esteem people

In another part of the research, let it be noted that there is a difference in values between the confident people versus low self-esteem people.

Low self-esteem

  • They are more sensitive to criticism
  • Emotionally unstable
  • React to negatively to failure
  • Social anxiety
  • Unhappiness

High self-esteem

  • Helps one weather some the emotional stress which comes from experiencing negative events, distress, and rejection

All because confident people have a different mindset when it comes to failure.

When I hit rock bottom in my divorce, it took one traumatic event to change my mindset in a single day. I did not have any self-esteem at the time, but when the mindset changed, so did my confidence. Now I am living a very happy life.

Did it happen overnight? No, it did not. It took work. It has to be something you seek and then work hard to achieve it. But it is doable and so worth it.

Simply put, self-assured individuals view failures as temporary setbacks as opportunities. They don’t judge themselves as disappointments. Their levels of self-worth remain unchanged after a letdown.

Confident people love to build relationships

Low confidence people

  • Shyness
  • Social aversion
  • Want to be left alone
  • Do not want to meet others

Confident people

  • Like to socialize
  • Don’t mind expanding network of friends/acquaintances (because they believe in themselves and their value to the world)

According to research, the area of our close relationships a main predictor of happiness in life.

Therefore, once again, studies show self-assured people are happier, as they seek to create lasting and caring relationships.

Confident people don’t seek external validation

Confident people don’t look for external validation compared to its counterparts, the low self-esteemed. And when you compare yourself to others, it causes unhappiness, anxiety, life dissatisfaction, and you feel like nothing is good enough.

To conclude:

We can’t assume that all confident people are always happy. It’s impossible to be happy all of the time.

Confident people are more emotionally stable, have a constructive outlook, and feel greater self-acceptance and respect.  And because they are able to focus on the positives in life, they enjoy greater relationships, seek enrichment through experience and self-improvement.

They are simply better equipped to deal with life, manage stress, and reach their goals.

All of these benefits that confidence brings translate into improved long-term well-being and satisfaction in life.
