Do you know if you have a social media addiction? Do you know how to beat social media addiction effectively?
What’s the first you look at in the morning? Is it your phone or some other electronic device?
When you sit down to eat, do you use an electronic device?
Social media has pros and cons just as anything else. The pros, it is easily available at your fingertips. The cons, it is readily available at your fingertips.
The pros of social media allow us to:
- Communicate with others all around the world
- To stream videos
- Watch movies
All within the comfort of your home, office, car, wherever.
The dark side of social media is its distraction. Because everything is at our fingertips anytime and anywhere, it can and will become a distraction.
Social media addiction can also:
- Disrupt personal life
- Work productivity
- Rob you of your time and doing hobbies
- Take your time away from improving yourself
You don’t’ need to completely wipe it out in its entirety, but use it in moderation.

How To Beat Social Media Addiction Effectively
1. Set goals
Ask yourself “What do I want to accomplish by decreasing my social media distractions?”
Do you want time to do things you want to do? Do you want to decrease your drama you may be hooked on?
Many of us stay up late surfing social media. I am terrible about this! 🤣
When you have figured out what your goal is, write it down and place it where you can see it. Put on a sticky note at your desk or on your bedside table.
2. Pick up on patterns
Usually, social media distractions start with a queue.
Maybe we had a fight with a family member, friend, or spouse. What is the first thing you do? Many look at social media.
This is not good. When you go to social media and see nothing but happy people (who are not happy all of the time, but this is all you see), doing happy things, you start to compare yourself with others.
There is likely a behavioral pattern.
Identifying this pattern will allow you to divert from social media and drive your thoughts elsewhere.
Maybe take a walk, exercise, yard work, housework, meditate, or a hobby. Do something you like to do that keeps you off social media.
3. Change notifications settings
Guess what you do when a notification pops up? You check it, right?
The more notifications you get, the more distractions you will have.
So customizing those settings will lessen the distractions.
You can also leave your device in another room or place it face down on your desk so you are not distracted.
4. Start a morning routine
Raise your hand if the first thing you look at in the morning is your phone or laptop. 🖐
Did you know checking emails 1st thing in the morning can lead to a less productive morning?
Try and steer clear of any devices in the morning unless it’s an emergency.
Use the morning time to:
- Stretch/exercise
- Prepare a good breakfast
- Meditate
- Or some other productive activity
Use a real alarm clock and not your phone. Using your phone directs you to social media.
5. Limit app usage
Did you know you can limit your app usage with settings within the app?
You can also delete apps to keep you from using them excessively.
One can also hide them in a folder if you can’t let go.
6. Use a web blocker
There are web blockers out there that can stop you from getting apps.
7. Establish no-tech zones
Designate specific areas where tech is forbidden.
- Dining room
- Bedroom
- Bathroom (This is huge in my house. Five teens and they go in the BR with their electronics and never come out)
8. Implement a reward program
Create a task list with things you want to get done. When your list is completed then reward yourself with something. If that means social media, feel free.
But, whatever it is, make sure it is worth your time.
9. Try timeboxing
Create a special time frame as to when you are going to look at social media.
This could mean certain hours of the day or a certain time of day to view social media.
10. Pick up a hobby
Finding something to fill your time will keep you away from social media and you are doing something you enjoy. You are being productive in a fun way.
Here are a few ideas: reading, meditation, crafting, fishing, woodworking, etc.
11. Attempt a social media fast
Commit to a few days, weeks, months, to give up social media.
I know people who have done this and they loved it. They came back refreshed and revived!
Final Thoughts
Mastering social media habits will take time
Don’t get discouraged and give up. There will be periods of highs and lows.
You will get distracted every once in a while.
If in doubt, look back to your life goals. When you achieve those, you will feel better than spending endless hours scrolling through social media.
