Negative People and The Impact They Have, How To Deal With

We all have negative people in our lives. We have the eternal pessimists who are quick to point out when you’re wrong. Then there are the ones who will always explain why your plans are never successful or will happen. Lastly, there are the people who bring you down by complaining about whatever’s happening in their own lives.

They’re consistently negative, and bring you down whenever they’re around.

One of my goals recently is to associate less with negative people. It’s been challenging to differentiate between people who are being constructive and those who just always bring me down. But I am learning and the benefits are paying off!

Now, I’m much more relaxed and happier cutting those out that drain my energy and surrounding myself with those that are primarily positive.

You see, when you hold an idea in your mind shared by people around you, your brain rewards you by triggering a release of dopamine. Dopamine contributes to feelings of alertness, focus, motivation, and happiness.

When you disagree with people around you, your brain sees that as a threat and triggers feelings of pain. This happens even when the idea is negative and doesn’t serve you.

This means that when you’re around negative people, your brain tells you to be more like them or at least relate. The same goes for positive people. The positive is where you want to be.

The Drama Queen

There are just some people that just love to drum up drama, and for no reason at all. Please, do not buy into the drama. Stay out of it. You do not need to create your own for no reason.

The Person You Will Never Please

Some people are impossible to please and it will never happen no matter how hard you try.   Accept this harsh as a fact of life. Do not waste any time trying to change theses types or to win their approval. It will not happen. Save your energy! In the end, these types will only hurt you with frustration and annoyance.

The Naysayer Who Will Always Dump Pn Your Dreams

Why do you want to consume your time with someone who discredits your dreams and everything you believe in.  These people are punishing your potential and what you are capable of achieving.

The Manipulator

These people are known as bullies and narcissists.  They use their negativity to intimidate and manipulate your thoughts. In other words, the people around them (YOU) fit into their plan simply based on how they can be used or manipulated for their own personal gain.

Ones That Insist You Should Be Someone Else

In the long run, it’s always better to be disrespected for who you are than respected for who you are not.  In fact, the only relationships that work well are the ones that make you a better person without changing you into someone other than yourself, and without preventing you from outgrowing the person you used to be.

Your Inner Critic

Unrelenting self-criticism often goes hand in hand with unhappiness and anxiety, and there is simply no reason for it.  There is absolutely no reason to be your own biggest critic – to harp on yourself for your shortcomings.  All you really need is the courage to be yourself.  Your real value is rooted in who you are, not who you aren’t.

How To Deal With Negativity From Yourself

Take Ownership

Get away from the mindset of being the victim, judging, and blaming. Take a different approach and develop a mindset of positivity of being more appreciative.

Likeable People Like Likeable People

When you place your unhappiness or negativity on others, they will too tend to be unhappy or negative. It’s contagious!

Don’t Take Your Thoughts Too Seriously

Words of Wisdom: “Do not believe everything you think about yourself.” We are our own worst critics.

Shift Your Focus

Sometimes when you have nothing but negative thoughts about yourself, you might need to step away and shift your focus to a positive one.

Don’t Make Their Problems Your Problems

If you are around negative people, do not let their problems become your own. Do not get caught up in that.

Let Go Of Your Need to Complain

Take responsibility of your own emotions. When you complain it only increases your negativity.

Raise Your Positivity

When you raise your positivity, the negativity will eventually disappear! 🙂

Here we are just taking a bad or negative situation and flipping it into something positive. If the negative person has any self-awareness about them, they will see what you are trying to do. Plus, it saves your own sanity.

  • “Wow. How do you typically handle that?”
  • “Is there anything I can do?”
  • “Oh gosh. Let’ talk about something happier. What else is new in your world?”
  • “Please, Correct me if I’m wrong, but It sounds like you’re upset because…”
  • “Wow, That sucks. I’m pretty impressed with how positive you’ve managed to stay calm about the whole thing.”
  • “I’m sorry to hear that. Did anything good come out of the situation?”

Ways To Stay Positive When Negative People Drain Your Energy

  1. Do not take it personally.
  2. Remain appreciative of the things that are going well for you and all that you have.
  3. Remember, everyone is different and has their own journeys they are navigating. Don’t judge.
  4. View the situation to be a challenge as an opportunity for growth and self-development.
  5. Spend time alone and reflect.

So the moral of this story is to be positive. Even when negative people are being negative, you see how to flip a negative into a positive, as positive people will only bring you down with them and suck up all of your energy.

The same goes for negative situations. When you are in one, find a positive thing about the negative and switch the mindset to positive.
