Do you ever stop and wonder what people are thinking? Do you even care what others think about you? Have you seen someone doing something and you can’t figure out why they are, either good or bad? And is it human nature to think “what are people thinking” altogether?
Although these questions are to get you thinking, I am writing this article for its humor, an easy read, and for you to challenge yourself to just take a step back and people watch. Also, keep in mind, I am not judging, just painting a picture for you in a humorous way.
So, a little background as to how this article came to life. Today was Sunday. In my neck of the woods, the mall does not open until 10:30 am for walkers and noon for stores. My daughter had a 9 am interview. She never filled out an application and she was asked to attend the interview through a group chat.
With that being said, I was at the mall for more than two hours! All of my observations are comprised within the two hours I sat in a severely empty parking lot.

What Are People Really Thinking?
Interview Comedy
My first observance was cute. All of the kids interviewing were out in front of the mall entrance with the same strange look like “Where do we go?” Except for my daughter, who was wearing a dress, all of the candidates were wearing black t-shirts and jeans. They all had their phones out and were texting away. Then I saw the whole group move to a side door. Coming across the parking lot was another kid running to catch up with the group. But wait, he comes another late-comer. Only this kid did not see the other group and walked aimlessly around for a moment. But, they finally made it in.
The whole process was was comical and cute at the same time. The unorganized interview made me laugh and think to myself, “What are people thinking?” These kids are most likely new to interviewing. They were even asked to show up to a place that was not opened. I am pretty sure this process could have gone smoother with a little more detail given in the group chat. LOL 🙂 Or was this a way to get the kids to communicate with each other before the interview even started?
High On Helium
The next encounter was two kids who appear to have been at the front of the mall entrance working at a valet station. They looked to be acting casual for the moment. The two were walking about and talking to each other.
As I sat about 50 yards away from the entrance, I looked up from my phone. All I could see was one of the kids look down and then he bent over as if he was vomiting. He was not. But, he was laughing pretty hard. I had my face shoved in my phone, so I missed what happened. It was at that time, I decided to put my phone away and people watch.
These two boys were having a fun time. they were laughing so hard their heads would fold to their chest and their knees would give as if they were going to fall down laughing. it was then I saw one of the kids go over to this bouquet of balloons filled with helium. Ah-ha! I figured out what was going on. One was sucking the helium hot the balloon, would pause and then speak. Since I could not hear what was being said, I can only assume it was the helium talking.
These two did this for several minutes. It made me chuckle. I thought to myself, “What are people thinking?” Then I thought, hmmm….. we should all have this much from fun from time to time!
Croc Style
Okay, so I want to set the record straight. I am just a plain Jane kind of gal. I am not a flashy dresser. My style is a pair of jeans, converse, a tank top, and a cardigan through the week and a ballcap, converse, jeans, and t-shirt on the weekend. So, I am no stylist by a long shot.
With that being said, I continued to people watch from my car in the empty parking lot. When out of the corner of my eye, I saw a man in a suit, walking across the parking lot. He was carrying his tie and his suit jacket but nothing else. I was totally thrown off when I noticed his shoes. Uh, correction, his Crocs! Did I mention he was wearing a suit? Sure I did. 🙂
Anyway, I looked again to see if he was carrying any other shoes with him. Sure enough, he was not.
What are people thinking? Did he think this was stylish? Or perhaps he did not care. After all, he was most likely comfortable. I am not admitting to having a pair, well yes, I do have a few pairs of sandals. made by Croc. (Click here to check out the latest Crocs)
A New Famous Driver?
So this even made me laugh for several uncomfortable minutes. Again, I am still sitting in the parking lot. It’s starting to pick up a little traffic. But for the most part, there were so many empty spaces on all sides of me., especially behind me. I was parked in the front row.
I noticed this little red Mini Cooper slowly creeping in front of me, coming from my left side. Keep in mind, there is no one parked several spaces to either side of me and the whole 2nd row is opened.
She slowly drives by me. You can tell she is breaking feverishly as the car is rocking back and forth. She slowly pulls into a parking space directly to my right and then pulls through. I thought to myself, good girl, you pulled through space so you would not have to back out of the parking space. I then turned and looked forward again.
About 2 minutes later, she pulled up next to me on my right side and coming from behind my car. Still, no one in several spaces on both side of me, but she had to pick the spot right next to mine.
My windows were rolled down. I kept hearing this clicking from her car. I looked over and she had both hands on the wheel staring straight ahead. her car was turned off at this time. She adjusted the wheel, then her seat, then her mirrors. After each adjustment, she would put both hands on the wheel and stare ahead. She did this for about 5 minutes.
But it does not end there. 🙂
For the next ten minutes, she sat and took selfies. I am surprised she did not park several spaces away to have her famous photoshoot. Regardless, What are people thinking? Is she is looking for words of affirmation because of a lack of confidence? Or maybe she is an Influencer?
The Back-In Driver
So, to keep the image burning, I now have one vehicle directly to the right of me. The parking lot is still fairly empty, but there is more traffic coming in. There is nothing but several empty spaces to the left of me and the second row is still opened completely.
In comes a truck from my left. It goes partly past my car and then decides to back into space directly to my left. Wait a minute. There are no cars in the second row and she could have pulled through into space beside me. But no, she struggled to back the large truck beside my vehicle. She backed in and then pulled out, backed in and then pulled back out. She did this several times before managing to get the vehicle in her own spot.
I am still baffled as to why she had to have the spot, right beside my vehicle considering all of the other spots that were opened. What are people thinking? Was she too focused on getting the closest spot to the sidewalk the led to the mall?
To conclude, I wrote this article to be somewhat funny. Yet, I also wrote it for three other reasons:
- Who cares what others think about what you wear, how you look, or how you act. As long as you are acting with good morals and values, do not ever let what others think about you, change who you are. You should always be true to yourself. if you are hanging with a group of friends who do not accept you for who you are, of you feel you have to be someone else for their approval, FIND OTHER FRIENDS. They are out there.
- Do not judge others. It is not your job. You never know what people are going through at that moment.
- Sit back and enjoy watching others. We live in a society where most of us have our nose in a phone all day or fingers are typing away on some electronic device. Separate yourself for an hour or so. See how people are living, having fun, etc. And have fun yourself and with others!
