11 Creative Ways to Slow Your Life Down
1. Don’t be in a hurry
If you feel like you have to rush, do it in a slow manner. 😂
When you rush things, you are more prone to making mistakes. Guess what happens when we make mistakes? Right! The activity we are doing will take longer.
So now, does it make more sense to hurry, or slow your life down and take your time, in order to save time?
2. Try daydreaming
Yes, I said it. Take time to daydream. We have been conditioned to not sit and daydream. It’s a waste of time. Have you heard it?
It’s not true. Daydreaming is when your brain is at its most productive! So, allow yourself some time every day to do nothing but sit and daydream. Let your mind slow down and wander anywhere it wants.
3. Work-Life Balance
There are so many studies out there showing us that the harder and longer we work, the less productive we become. So again, is this saving us any time? We are after all trying to slow our lives down.
Set clear boundaries for yourself. Work time is work time and everything else is your free time. That means, no looking at work emails or taking calls in your free time. Establish those boundaries and stick to them.
Note to self: this does include weekends, holidays, and vacations!
4. Multitasking is a no, no
Although multitasking may seem to be productive, it actually is not. How much focus can you put into multiple tasks at once and not mess up?
Multitasking actually slows down our ability to produce efficiently. Focus on the task at hand and it will be more thoroughly complete and in a shorter amount of time.
5. Sleep
Say what? Do we have to sleep? Duh!
Sleep has many benefits, it’s not just about slowing down life, but it works for that too.
Quality sleep is vital to slowing down your brain and giving it time to refresh, rest, and revive. Be sure you get at least 8 hours of sleep each night and let yourself nap when you need to. (Except when you are driving, but that’s a whole other article 🤣)
6. Journal
If you don’t do it now, it’s time to start.
Don’t cram your schedule so full that you overcommit or overwork yourself. Allow yourself time before each commitment/event to prepare and enough time after to reflect. Don’t rush from meeting to meeting.
And of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with an empty schedule to treat yourself to some well-deserved self-love.
Remember, you are your own calendar. Don’t let your life be defined by how you spend your time and with whom you spend your time.
7. Disconnect
Take control of your electronic devices. Don’t le the rule or overwhelm you. They are simply tools. Not your life!
Turn them off, and put them away to the point you are not tempted to look at them. This includes that smartwatch too 🙂
Don’t be a slave to other people’s messages. And again, don’t work emails on holidays, vacations, or weekends. That is your time!
8. Remove yourself from distractions
Oh, look a squirrel! Exactly!
Today’s modern world is full of distractions, but how focused can you be to remain present?
You have to be very disciplined to now falling victim to distraction but the general noise of your life, your electronic devices, emails, and other people demanding your time. Learn to say NO!.
9. Be early
Not right on time, not a few minutes late. Be early!
Always allow yourself 10 minutes to be early for every meeting, event, etc. This includes both work and personal commitments. You will be quite surprised as to how much calmer your life is when you do this one simple task.
And be sure to enjoy the free time this gives you and use it to slow down.
10. Allow yourself some slow time
Take the time to slow down your own personal clock. Go for a slow walk on a trail or in your neighborhood. Enjoy nature. Perhaps sitting in the park is your forte.
Whatever it is you decide to do be sure to turn off your tv, mobile devices, and any other distractions. Now just sit there and think.
11. Give the gift of time
Do you know what the best gift is that you can give anyone? It’s your undivided time! Give undistracted, quality time to your friends and family. You might be surprised as to what an act of kindness might do. 🙂
