How To Overcome Fear and Anxiety Effectively

Fear is one of the most powerful emotions and has a strong effect on your mind and body.

Anxiety follows close behind and uses fear that deals with thoughts or threats regarding something going wrong in the future rather than the present time.

Some people become overwhelmed by fear and want to avoid situations that might make them frightened or anxious. This could be something like public speaking or maybe swimming.

Although it may be hard to break the cycle, it can be done!

What is making you afraid?

What are you afraid of and someone else is afraid of being different. And if you are afraid of the same things someone else is, you may handle things differently.

This first step to sorting out your problems of fear is knowing exactly what you are afraid of.

What makes you anxious?

Anxiety describes worry. When your fear persists over time, that is when anxiety kicks in.

It’s used when fear is about the future rather than what is happening at the current moment.

What are the signs of fear/anxiety?

  • fast heartbeat
  • fast/heavy breathing
  • muscles feel weak, or the opposite…tense, depending on the situation
  • excessive sweating
  • hard to focus
  • feeling dizzy
  • can’t eat
  • cold sweats
  • dry mouth

There can be other signs and on the flip side, you may not experience all of these signs.

Remember: fear is usually short term and the longer it exists is when the more anxiety starts to take place.

If I am not in danger, why do I feel like this

During the early times, our ancestors’ fear was actually caused by certain threats or dangers.

We have reactions of fear for the same, but we also have additional fears such as money, social situation, traveling, etc. And there is no way to get away from them. They are constantly hounding us.

Fear is really the scariest when we don’t know why we are scared.

Instead of alerting you about the fear, your anxiety starts up and you don’t know why.

I was sitting at my desk one day and my heart felt like it was pounding out of my chest. But why? I didn’t feel like I was stressed or anything. And usually, I can focus on something else and change my mindset. But that wasn’t happening. I could not shake it.

It could have been a panic attack. I don’t know. But it was scary because I could not control it.

Sounds weird huh? Unless you have been there before.

Why will my ear not go away?

Fear can take place when faced with something unfamiliar.

But it can also be an everyday occurrence for some, even if you know what you fear.

There are plenty of triggers for fear every day and you can’t always work out why.

Perhaps you made a mistake at work and you are afraid of being called out by your boss. Maybe you had an argument with a friend and you fear they will be mad at you for a while. The scenarios are endless. 

The emotional parts of your brain keep sending signals to your body.

What is a panic attack?

Feeling overwhelmed by physical and mental feelings of fear.

What is a phobia?

Extreme fear of a particular animal, place, situation, or thing.

People with phobias have a need to avoid contact with that anxiety of fear.

How do I know if I need help?

Fear and anxiety affect all of us. We deal with things differently as well. So, it is up to you to find out if you are needing help or not and what works for you.

A few signs that might lead you to seek help:

  1. if the episodes are long-lasting and you are struggling to cope
  2. causing health problems
  3. if the fear is overtaking your life
  4. frequent panic attacks

What are the ways I can help myself?

Face Your Fear

If you avoid what makes you fearful, you might stop doing things you want or need to do.

Right now there are people who are scared to go to the grocery store. That is a necessity. I am scared of heights but I love to climb mountains. So I keep climbing.

Exposing yourself to your fears can be effective to overcome them.

Know Yourself

Learn more about your fear and anxiety.

Keep a diary of what happens to you when the fear/anxiety sets in. Records what makes you fearful and anxious and then anything that helps the situation or makes the situation worse.

Exercise

When you increase your exercise, you increase your concentration and take your mind off your fear and anxiety.

Relax

Learn relaxation techniques such as breathing, using nature, and the sounds of nature to relax you. Some may prefer a massage. Others will imagine themselves in a happy place.

Healthy Eating

Say what? What does healthy eating have to do with fear and anxiety?

When you intake a lot of sugar, your blood sugar starts to dip. Sugar can also work the opposite and may make you anxious.

Think about it. Do you give your child an Mt Dew before bedtime? 🤣

Avoid Alcohol and Drink Moderately

People drink when they are nervous. If you get nervous too much, this may cause dependency.

Alcohol can also make you feel more afraid and anxious at times.

Therapy

Some people will seek out a therapist to assist with their issues. Therapy should be looked at in a good way. In the past, it was frowned upon, but if you find the right therapist, it is a really good tool.

Some other things you may try are meditation, yoga, tai chi, and more.
