What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

PTSD can leave one feeling stuck with a constant state of danger and painful memories.

After a traumatic experience, it’s normal to feel:

But if it doesn’t subside, you may be suffering from PTSD.

People can be affected by PTSD who personally experiences a traumatic event. For example, One may witness an event, such as first responder, law enforcement, or bystander. Another example is one who was raped, kidnapped, or suffered from mental or physical abuse. And we have our precious Veterans who were part of and witnessed warfare.

What Causes PTSD?

It occurs when you experience too much stress in a particular situation.

Even though the situation has passed, your nervous system is “stuck.”

In my case of mental and verbal abuse I had endured for so many years, it has been several years since I have removed myself from the abuse. However, even to this day, when I drive back into the town where I used to live, or to the city where all of my court hearings we heard, I get highly stressed and anxious. To hear the sound of my abuser’s voice, I feel the same. Or even just to look at him, the stress begins.

But there is hope and I have learned to ignore it as I have moved on from the past life of hell.

When you are in a stressful situation your body reacts with eh “fight/flight” response. These responses may be, but are not limited to:

  • heartbeat pounds faster
  • blood pressure increases
  • muscles tighten
  • then body calms after
