Are you able to embrace boredom? Should you embrace boredom? Bare with me and I will share with you 4 reasons why we should choose to embrace boredom.
Many of us have the belief that if we want to pursue something, then we must have a passion for it. Is that how you feel? Do you feel you have to be motivated and hyped-up to achieve your goals or obtain your innermost desires and passions?
Having this philosophy leads us to be extremely motivated at the beginning of our journey and we are very excited, but then we hit a point where we get bored with what we are doing. We are no longer motivated because we are bored and then we never obtain our goals or passions.
Many of us start our days with an alarm clock, but because we lost motivation, we sleep in
When we get home from work we are tired and want to rest. The last thing we want to do is go to the gym. Even though we know we need and want to so you can release some stress. But you are way too tired tonight.
At home or work, your work starts to pile up, and then what happens? Do you start to procrastinate?
When procrastination sets then, we never finish our goals or desires. Can you believe that 92% of us at this point, then give up? That’s a high percentage of people who don’t achieve their goals or passions. This happens because we can no longer find our passion or the motivation we once had, and we start coming up with reasons or excuses. We tell ourselves we will finish tomorrow. And we all know, “tomorrow never comes.”

Embracing Boredom
When I was an undergraduate, I began majoring in Journalism. I had a fascination with writing and investigations. However, when I got to college, I found it painfully boring. The classes bored me to death. And I mistakenly believed I was not passionate about it as I had once thought I was. So I switched my major to History.
Now keep in mind, I was a fan of History classes in high school. But I thoroughly enjoyed my first History class in college. I enjoyed both my passion for History and writing. So I got the best of both worlds.
Long story short, all of the other fields had their own share of boring classes as well. I did not enjoy every History class I was forced to take.
Any path we travel is going to have certain points that are extremely boring. Yet extremely necessary in order to achieve success.
On our journey to reaching our goals, it is absolutely inevitable that we are going to face boring intervals or moments. There are going to be times when will need to do monotonous work to complete our passions. However, if you can push through these tedious moments of boredom, you will be able to accomplish those things you are truly passionate about. And the results are fascinating!
How To Embrace Boredom
1. Remember your ambition
As we discussed earlier, the first step to embracing boredom is to understand that it doesn’t necessarily represent a lack of passion. You are not going to be excited every step of the way through your journey. And guess what? That is perfectly normal!
What you need to keep in mind and remember during these boring times is, what is your purpose or what was your ambition that motivated you in the first place.
When you encounter those boring moments throughout the journey, always remember your purpose. Remember why you chose this path in the first place. That is where your passion can be found again.
2, Do the boring stuff first
Naturally, we have the tendency to put the boring stuff to the side and then MAYBE do them later. We procrastinate and these boring things that are on our to-do lists.
It is unfortunate that we put the boring things off because we then tend to have less willpower to complete them. This is why not only should you do the boring things first, but do them in the morning. The morning hours is the time when we have the most willpower to complete daunting tasks. You have had a good night’s rest, your brain is rested and revived and you have eaten a healthy breakfast. You are ready to conquer the world!
So, the quicker you get these boring things over with and earlier in the day, the easier it is to complete it and get it off of your list.
3. The Promodoro Technique
We now know that we need to get the boring tasks completed first. So, how do we do that you might ask?
The best way is to not be overwhelmed by the process. You might try using the Promodoro Technique.
This technique involves setting a timer for 25 minutes and then you follow with a 5-minute break. I used to study this way in college. I would study for 30 minutes and then take a 10-minute break when preparing for exams. The break gives you time to reset. Keeping repeating until the boring task is completed.
Don’t forget to remove all distractions. You will be surprised how much you can get done in 25 minutes if you stay focused. This technique will have you finishing in no time. You will not feel the need to procrastinate and you will not feel overwhelmed.
4. Love the process of boredom
You don’t have to be in love with every part of the journey, but please love the process of it.
Let’s take your world-class endurance athlete. Do you think they leave to run and work out every day? The answer is NO. They do the same things for hours upon hours to train. They run, the list weights, they have regimented diets. Not every part of that process is enticing to them.
The difference between an endurance athlete and those that don’t complete their goals or accomplish their desires is the love of the process. Endurance athletes are head-strong and know what they are doing will only make them better no how much they like or dislike the boring parts. They push themselves every day to see if they can go farther or faster. It’s one step closer to achieving their dream. And yes, some days are harder than others, but they fall in love with the process and they keep in mind their end result.
In your own journey, you will need to find ways to fall in love with the process. Journal and track your progress. Things you like, things you don’t like. Things you did to get through the boring stuff.
Final Thoughts
We must learn to embrace boredom. Without this step, you will not be successful in achieving your goals and fulfilling your desire. If you remember your purpose, get the boring things completed first, avoid being overwhelmed, and fall in love with the process, you will be able to conquer these boring moments and move on. Embrace these boring points and it is then when you be able to celebrate the fun, exciting, and successful moments.
