K-Pop Group BTS – Their “Love Yourself” Tour

On August 24, 2018, BTS released their album “Love Yourself.” The album includes 25 tracks. Most of those tracks are from Love Yourself: Her and Love Yourself: Tear. The album debuted at number one in South Korea, Canada, Japan, and the United States.

I went to the BTS “Love Yourself” concert in Chicago a little over two weeks ago. I traveled over six hours with my best friend and my daughter to see them. We were traveling to Soldier Field, an outdoor concert. The temperature was in the 30’s and it had just rained. The concert was sold out for both Saturday and Sunday. Do you ask why I travel all this way to watch an outdoor concert in 30-degree weather? I love their music and they’re on-stage performance. Even more impressive….the message in each song.

concert scene

Some of the album themes for BTSs “Love Yourself” expressed empowerment, youth, appreciation, and consideration. The moods exhibited through the album are lively, bold, romantic and ambitious among may other things.

These guys not only deliver valuable messages through their lyrics, but they also present a heartwarming, sincere and genuine “thank you” throughout their performances. And did I mention these guys can perform? Hell yeah!!! They dance, they sing, they have fun! At some point in the concert, I think the ARMY took over. 😉

Here are several songs from the BTS stadium tour, “Love Yourself” and their meanings. I hope you check out their music. BTS has always had a good message to deliver from bullying to self-love. They are supportive and very appreciative of their fan base

I’m Fine

The lyrics to this song express the understanding between two people. Their relationship consists of hardships, yet they still find a way towards peace and happiness. The lyrics strongly suggest that BTS no longer needs someone to save them. They are “fine” taking care of themselves.

Magic Shop

Jungkook, at a BTS press conference, stated, “This song is really written for our fans. If people can gain strength and get consoled through this song, we think we would be very happy about this.”

The song was written to be a consoling track for fans who felt frustrated and tired. If any of them opened the door to their hearts and let the “magic shop” in, they would find peace and strength as the seven BTS members would be waiting there for them.

Euphoria

This track is a “feel good” song. It expresses happiness, associated with new journeys and young love. You might find some feelings of fake love.

Run

The group explains this title pick as, “Part one explained how youth is tiring and difficult, and it also touched on how we feel like we’re always on edge. Part two will have a more adventurous and daring feel to it. That’s why our title song is “Run.”

Serendipity

This song stars BTS member Jimin. Serendipity is a reference to a type of “discovery”. It is found by chance and wisdom. The discovery is something unexpected and observed by someone who is wise to understand its potential value. Jimin uses a metaphor in this song about how Alexander Fleming accidentally discovered Penicillin.

DNA

RM’s take on DNA, ” When we’re talking about our title tracks, “DNA” is about the expression of a young, passionate love…At the same time, “DNA” is taking BTS to new ground. We tried to apply new grammar and perspectives – if you listen to the song, you’ll understand what I’m trying to say – it’s very different from our previous music, technically and musically. I believe it’s going to be the starting point of a second chapter of our career; the beginning of Chapter Two.”

Boys With Fun

This song from their setlist approaches criticism of the materialism of rife in society through parody. It has the vibe of a tropical party anthem for en exotic island getaway. But then the lyrics disclose the facade when J-Hope raps the lyrics, “I don’t have the money but I want to leave, far away.”

To read between the lines, you find the hidden message of the emptiness of terms like YOLO to the point that they lose their meaning. The lyrics are thoughtful yet deliberate to demonstrate thoughtlessness.

Silver Spoon

Billboard wrote an article that included a review of the track… “Much has been said about the social commentary BTS have laced their discography with, and this swaggering dis track is full of that. Named after the Korean slang for “try-hard,” its boisterous bass line and gritty production – especially blaring horns and haunting pipes – accentuates the group’s sass, as they sarcastically address the current generation’s lack of career stability. A song that reflects the lives of people not only in Korea but also around the world, “Baepsae” is one of BTS’ most impactful songs. “

Dope

The song demonstrates a high-energy pop track, in typical BTS fashion, deals with the struggles of youth and the expectations that come with it.

Fake Love

“Fake Love” is about realizing one’s love and what they thought was fate. But, it actually turns out to be fake love.

Epiphany

“Epiphany” can be defined as a “moment of sudden powerful realization.” The title defines the formative theme of the album and the entirety of the “Love Yourself” series. Jin’s epiphany is that he is capable of self-love.

The Truth Untold

It translates to “sincerity that couldn’t be delivered.” It references the smeraldo flower, a fictitious flower that BTS has been associated with on more than one occasion Similar to how different flowers can mean different things, the smeraldo means “the truth I couldn’t tell.”

Mic Drop

A ‘mic drop’ is a popular gesture of victory, or totally owning a performance/speech and announcing ‘you’re done’. The group also explained that “MIC Drop” was specifically inspired by the iconic “Obama out” mic drop during his last White House correspondents’ dinner.

love yourself quote

To conclude, I really just wanted to point out that we all have problems and issues. These matters are not only in our lives, or our friends and families, but they are all over the world. Music has the power to send messages and heal in masses. It brings people together. So, open your mind and check out some of their performances and lyrics. They are quite impressive!
